Meta Dot Limited was honored to participate in the "East Kowloon Cyber Teen Talent Development Day" on October 19, 2024, at Pok Oi Hospital 80th Anniversary Tang Ying Hei College. This impactful event was jointly organized by the Kowloon East Regional Crime Prevention Office and the Hong Kong China Network Security Association (HKCNSA), with special sponsorship from Beijing HuaShun XinAn Technology Co., Ltd.
Tackling the Deepfake Challenge
As experts in AI education, our team delivered an engaging workshop focused on deepfake technology—an increasingly prevalent digital phenomenon that poses both opportunities and challenges in our interconnected world. The workshop designed by Meta Dot aimed to equip Form 1 to Form 5 students with critical skills to navigate this complex aspect of digital literacy.
Our interactive session covered three key areas:
Understanding Deepfake Technology
We began with a comprehensive introduction to how deepfake technology works, explaining the underlying AI mechanisms including Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) and diffusion models. Through visual demonstrations, students witnessed firsthand how these technologies can generate synthetic media that appears remarkably authentic.
Developing Deepfake Detection Skills
The core of our workshop focused on empowering students with practical skills to identify potential deepfakes in their daily digital interactions. We shared key indicators to watch for, including:
- Unnatural facial movements or expressions
- Inconsistent lighting or shadows
- Audio-visual synchronization issues
- Blurring or artifacts around facial features
- Contextual inconsistencies in speech or behavior
Students participated in an engaging "Real or Fake?" challenge where they analyzed various media samples and applied their newly learned detection techniques.
Promoting Responsible AI Use
Beyond technical skills, we emphasized the ethical dimensions of AI technology. Discussions centered around:
- The potential societal impacts of deepfakes
- Legal and ethical considerations when creating or sharing synthetic media
- The importance of critical thinking when consuming digital content
- How AI technology can be used constructively rather than deceptively
Hands-on Learning Experience
What made our workshop particularly effective was its interactive approach. Students didn't just listen—they participated in hands-on exercises that included:
- A guided demonstration of accessible AI tools that create simple, ethical deepfakes for educational purposes
- A collaborative exercise where students developed guidelines for responsible AI use
- A deepfake detection challenge that tested their analytical skills
Impact and Student Response
The response from students was overwhelmingly positive. Many expressed surprise at how sophisticated yet accessible deepfake technology has become, while also gaining confidence in their ability to approach digital content with a more critical eye.
A Form 4 student remarked, "I never realized how important it is to question what I see online. Now I have actual tools to help me identify what might be manipulated."

Building Digital Resilience
Dr. Law Yuet Wing, Regional Commander of the Kowloon East Regional of the Hong Kong Police Force, emphasized during the event that young people, as digital natives, should develop strong cybersecurity awareness. Our deepfake workshop directly supported this goal by equipping students with practical skills to protect themselves in the digital landscape.
Looking Forward
Meta Dot remains committed to developing educational initiatives that prepare young people for an increasingly complex digital world. By combining technical knowledge with ethical frameworks, we aim to foster a generation of digitally literate citizens who can harness the benefits of AI technology while mitigating its risks.
We extend our sincere thanks to the Kowloon East Regional Crime Prevention Office, the Hong Kong China Network Security Association, and Pok Oi Hospital 80th Anniversary Tang Ying Hei College for the opportunity to contribute to this meaningful event.
Through continued collaboration between educational institutions, technology companies, and public safety organizations, we can build a stronger foundation for youth to explore and grow confidently in the digital space.
